San Luis Obispo County: PG&E Nearing Completion of Cuesta Grade Electrical Project

WOODLAND — Sixth-grade student Bailey Robinson-Burmester was nothing but composed as he prepared to give a presentation on the demise of the honeybee while describing his other project to plant more trees in Yolo County. The 12-year-old was earnest as he talked about his goal, which 4-H calls a “revolution of responsibility.” “I really want to inspire kids to help their community,” said the boy, dressed in a white shirt and pants and wearing a green 4-H tie and felt cap. The setting was Farm Connection Day, held last Friday (May 3) at the Yolo County Fairgrounds to coincide with the annual 4-H Spring Show, a huge showcase of children’s skills — everything from displaying pigs and other farm animals (“Like Charlotte’s Web,” one attendee says) to archery to photography to cake baking.

Mars Curiosity Engineer Steltzner, a College of Marin Alumnus, Helps College Celebrate New Building

Curiosity is what led Adam Steltzner of Sausalito to pursue his education at the College of Marin, and it was NASA's Curiosity land rover that Steltzner helped send to Mars. "We never really know where our curiosity is going to take us," Steltzner said. Steltzner, 50, NASA's lead mechanical engineer for last year's Mars expedition, described his educational journey Friday at the College of Marin's grand opening of its new Science, Math and Nursing Building.

Lompoc Expo Helps Kids, Adults Prep for Disaster

In a small room with very little space to maneuver, 7-year-old Xavier Moncado fought back smoke on Saturday morning as he looked for an exit. “All I saw was brown-ness,” he said. “Then I thought the door opened and I hit my head on it.” Fortunately for Moncado, who recounted his experience while slurping on a snow cone, he wasn’t in any actual danger. His plight was fully intentional. Moncado was one of dozens of attendees at a disaster preparedness event hosted by the Lompoc Fire Department on Saturday at the Home Depot parking lot. The event, the first of what the LFD is hoping becomes an annual tradition, featured several interactive displays and demonstrations designed to highlight the importance of being prepared and preventing fire damage.
