Manufactured Gas Plants

Former Eureka Manufactured Gas Plant

PG&E is working to address environmental impacts at the site of a former manufactured gas plant (MGP) near 14th and Railroad Streets in Eureka, California. The MGP and a steam electric power plant operated at the site from 1902 to the early 1940s. PG&E acquired the site in 1927 and sold a portion of the site in the 1960s, after removing all operating structures. Today, the site consists of a privately-owned parcel that operates as a wood transfer facility and a PG&E-owned parcel used for general construction and substation operations. All work is being conducted voluntarily by PG&E and is being overseen by the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board.

In 2001, PG&E completed remediation work to remove soils containing residues from the gas-manufacturing process and install an asphalt cap on the company-owned parcel, located on the east side of Railroad Avenue. Since 2003, PG&E has conducted several phases of investigation on the privately-owned parcel to define the extent of remaining MGP residues and results indicate that there is no evidence of a health concern to current site workers. Subsequently, in 2011, PG&E remediated in-place a former underground fuel oil pipeline beneath Railroad Avenue and Waterfront Drive, which once supplied the MGP. PG&E continues to conduct semi-annual groundwater monitoring on the privately-owned western MGP parcel and is currently developing a plan for the remediation of the 1.4-acre MGP footprint. PG&E is preparing a Feasibility Study/Corrective Action Plan to evaluate and select the remedial option for this site that will be available in 2014.

PG&E will continue to keep the community informed about this project through fact sheets, work notices and other outreach, as appropriate.
