The PG&E Plug-In Electric Vehicle Rate Plan Comparison Calculator provides only
an illustration of potential costs and savings associated with a plug-in
electric vehicle based on manufacturer's specifications. It is intended solely
for illustrative purposes and actual costs will vary based on individual usages,
time of usage, weather condition and other factors. Customers seeking actual
data relating to a particular vehicle should contact the vehicle manufacturer
or dealer. Customers may request a rate analysis based on their personal
history of home electricity usage by contacting PG&E at 1-877-743-7782 or

The optimal time to charge your vehicle is between 12:00 AM (midnight) and 7:00 AM using a Level 2 charging system
EV-A Rate Option
Provides a single meter and one baseline amount that is shared by the home and the PEV. If PEV charging will not significantly increase daily energy use or current energy use is mostly during non-peak hours, this may be the better rate option.
EV-B Rate Option
Provides two meters - one for the home, which remains on your current residential rate, and a second meter for the PEV on a Time of Use rate. This option provides two baselines. If PEV charging significantly impacts your daily energy usage or current energy use is mostly during peak hours, this may be the better rate option.
E-1 Rate Option
PEV owners have the option to charge their plug-in electric vehicles on their existing residential rate plans. However, one should note that residential electric rates (E-1) typically do not include a time-of-use component, which should be taken into account when calculating potential costs.
E-9A Rate Option
Provides a single meter and one baseline amount that is
shared by the home and the PEV, If PEV charging will not significantly
increase daily energy use or current energy use is mostly during non-peak
hours, this may be the better rate option.
E-9B Rate Option
Provides two meters - one for the home, which remains on
the current residential flat rate, and a second meter for the PEV on a TOU
rate. This option provides two baselines. If PEV charging significantly
impacts your daily energy usage or current energy use is mostly during
peak hours, this may be the better rate option.
By summer of 2013, the E-9 rate will be closed and replaced with a new electric vehicle rate, Schedule EV, which contains these same two options. This new rate will not have a “tiered” structure like the current E-9 rate schedule. When Schedule EV becomes available next summer, customers taking service on either option of the E-9 schedule may choose to stay on that rate schedule, or move to the new EV rate schedule. If no choice is made, customers will remain on the E9 rate until at least the end of 2014 (exact timing will be based on California Public Utilities Commission decision), at which point they will transition to the new EV rate. Alternatively, they may also choose another applicable rate schedule if so desired.

EV-B and E9-B rates require additional construction costs to install a second panel, which may vary from $2,000 to $10,000.

Monthly electricity costs shown above do not include local taxes
and fees. The rates used for calculations are effective
05/01/2013.
Monthly costs shown for EV-A and EV-B, and for E-9A and E-9B, do not include the one time engineering / constructions costs that may be incurred due to electrical panel / service upgrades. Please consult your electrician to understand the installation costs for your situation.
Estimation of monthly PEV usage assumes charging of PEV at Level 2 during off peak hours, unless you selected a different charging time.
