SmartDay Tips: Discover simple ways to reduce your electricity usage.

Small changes in your routine–such as shifting power-hungry activities to the morning or evening–will help ease the load on California's power grid. Knowing what to do on SmartDays is the easiest way to ensure you'll save money on the SmartRate™ Plan. Here are some tips to help you reduce your energy consumption on SmartDays and other days of the year, too.

    1. Pre-cool Your Home
    Allow cool air from the morning or night to flow into your home. As the temperature rises outside, circulate the pre-cooled air with a fan.

    2. Shift Your Chores
    Perform household chores requiring power-hungry appliances—like clothes washers, dishwashers, pool pumps and vacuums—before 2 p.m. or after 7 p.m.

    3. Program Your Air Conditioner
    Set the air conditioning to turn on after 7 p.m. if you use a programmable thermostat.

    4. Reduce Non-essential Lighting
    Reduce or turn off lighting in non-essential areas. Consider a motion sensor in areas you use less often.
