Time of Use Plan Changes (E6)

The current residential Time of Use rate (E6) is closing to new customers on March 1, 2016. All customers enrolled in the E6 rate plan prior to March 1, 2016 will be able to remain on the rate through 2022.*

Save by shifting daily usage to low demand times.

With Time of Use, you still need to conserve energy throughout the month to avoid and react to higher priced tiers, but the price you pay also varies thoughout the time of day and season. This works great if you can use air conditioning and major appliances in the morning or evening during the summer.
Rates are lowest in the morning, late evening and weekends from May through October, and at all times outside 5-8PM on weekdays from November through April. The graphic below shows Time of Use pricing (Tier 2) over one year. See the next section to understand Time of Use and Tiers.
Lowest rates on weekdays from May to October are 16.6 cents per kilowatt hour. Highest rates are 35.8 cents per kilowatt hour, and medium rates are 24.3 cents per kilowatt hour. On weekends rates are lowest at all times except from 5 PM to 8 PM, when they are medium; and on holidays rates are lowest all day.
For November to April rates are 17.0 cents per kilowatt hour at all times except 5 PM to 8 PM on weekdays, when they are 18.7 cents per kilowatt hour.

Time of Use and Tiers

Like the Tiered Rate Plan, as you use the electricity allotments in each tier, you move to the next tier and higher price.
This means pricing varies based on the time of the day and the usage tier you've reached. To save, avoid both higher price times and conserve total usage over your bill period.

Tier Information table
Tier 1: Each monthly billing period begins at the lowest rate. While you want to stretch as far as possible, average customers use all of Tier 1 in about 15-20 days.
Tier 2: With about one third the allotment of Tier 1, Tier 2 costs slightly more (+3.3¢). If your Tier 1 lasts 15-20 days, Tier 2 could last another 5-6 days.
Tier 3: The rate increases dramatically (+5.9¢) in this tier. Customers who enter Tier 3 are consuming significant amounts of electricity.
Tier 4: Finally; if you enter tier 4, you are using more than twice your Tier 1 total, and the rate increases by an additional 7.5¢.

E6 Rate Closure  

Recently, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved new rate structures with the goal to more closely align electricity prices with the true cost of providing service. As a part of these changes, the residential E6 rate plan is closing to new customers on March 1, 2016. All customers enrolled in the E6 rate plan prior to March 1, 2016 will be able to remain on the rate through 2022*

New Time-of-Use Rate Plans

Beginning March 1, 2016, two new time-of-use rate plans will be available. These new rate plans will be called Time of Day Rate Plans (currently known as ETOU-A and ETOU-B). Below are brief descriptions about these new rates.

  • TIME OF DAY RATE PLAN 3-8 p.m. (ETOU-A): This rate plan is best if you don’t use much energy and can be flexible about when you use it. If you can reduce your usage from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays this rate plan may be best for you.
  • TIME OF DAY RATE PLAN 4-9 p.m. (ETOU-B): This rate plan is best if you tend to use a high amount of energy, but can be flexible about when you use it. If you can reduce your usage from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, this rate plan would be beneficial.

If you are a Solar/Net Energy Metering customer, please call 1-877-743-4112 to see what rates you are eligible for, compare savings, and select a new rate.

*In addition to closing the E6 rate plan to new customers on March 1, 2016, the CPUC ordered that E6 eventually be phased out. Customers may remain on E6 only through 2022. Through 2020, the terms of E6 will remain the same, with a two-year transition to a 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. peak period by 2022. Please note, if you move your service, you will not be eligible to remain on the E6 Rate Plan.
