SmartMeter™ Benefits for Solar and Renewable Customers

You already know about the benefits of using solar and renewable energy. With the meter upgrade, you will have the added benefit of SmartMeter™ technology. You will now be able to see online when you are using or exporting energy. The electric SmartMeter™ measures your renewable energy use and securely transmits it to PG&E.

You will be able to see the details of your net energy usage online before you receive your Net Energy Metering statement.

Viewing Net Energy Usage Online

SmartMeter™- enabled online tools allow you to see hour-by-hour net energy usage data. The charts within My Energy will show you how much total energy was used from PG&E (positive values) or was exported to PG&E (negative values) by bill or by day (including by hour). To access these charts, you will need to log in to My Energy.

My Energy daily electricy use chart

For each hour, you can see the total amount of energy you used or exported.

When you generate your own power from a solar energy system, or other renewable technology, the electrical load will be served first and any electricity you don’t consume will be exported to the grid. Most of the time, customers use the power from the solar or renewable system, but may still draw power from the grid. Sometimes, particularly during the day, the system may generate more energy than the home or business requires, and the surplus power is exported to the grid.

PG&E only has a single meter that is connected to the home and the only information that is recorded is net usage—either the amount of energy that is flowing to the property (a positive number), or the amount of energy that is flowing to the grid (a negative number) during every hour of the day. Some customers may measure the production from the solar or other renewable system using a separate meter attached directly to the system.
