PG&E Receives Clean Air Champion Award from East Bay Clean Cities Coalition Award recognizes superior achievement or sustained excellence in the alternative fuel and advanced technology clean air vehicle field

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) was honored with a Clean Air Champion Award from the East Bay Clean Cities Coalition today for its innovative Electric Worksite Idle Management system (e-WIMS) bucket trucks manufactured by Altec. The award recognizes superior achievement or sustained excellence in the alternative fuel and advanced technology clean air vehicle field.
Developed by Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) in partnership with Altec Industries, the e-WIMS advanced technology uses a separate battery system to quietly and efficiently power equipment on the truck while on the job site. This new technology eliminates the need for the engine to be idling in order for utility crews to conduct their work, resulting in both reduced emissions and fuel consumption.
In addition to the clean air benefits of these vehicles, fuel consumption and operating costs are significantly reduced, resulting in over $700,000 in fuel savings for the utility in 2011 alone. Another key benefit of this technology is enhanced worksite safety, since the crews can communicate more easily without the drone of an idling engine. What’s more, this quieter operation also allows the vehicles to be operated at extended hours that previously would not have been feasible due to noise concerns and local ordinances, improving the utility’s ability to respond to outages at any time of the day.

"This innovative e-WIMS technology will result in reduced emissions and fuel savings, which will both benefit the environment and reduce fuel consumption."
PG&E was the first utility in the country to integrate this technology into its fleet vehicles and operates two different models of these trucks, a 37-foot trouble truck and a 55-foot Material Handler. Currently, PG&E has 320 of these vehicles in its fleet, with plans to purchase an additional 127 during 2013. By 2017, the utility plans to have over 700 e-WIMS trucks in its fleet.

The East Bay Clean Cities coalition is a non-profit 501 (C) organization operated entirely by volunteer staff. East Bay was officially chartered as a Clean Cities Coalition in 1994 by a core group of dedicated local organizations sharing a common interest in the mission and goals of Clean Cities. Clean Cities is dedicated to replacing, reducing, and eliminating petroleum consumption while lessening the dependence of our nation upon imported petroleum products. Today the coalition has over 60 active stakeholders and is rapidly growing. The East Bay Clean Cities Coalition currently represents Alameda County, Contra Costa County, and parts of Solano County and is in the process of expanding our geographic region north to include Sonoma County and Napa County.
