Depending on climate and other factors, HVAC equipment consumes roughly 40 to 50 percent of a commercial building’s total energy usage. Air leakage, heating and cooling systems that respond poorly to an ever-changing climate, and old or inefficient HVAC equipment can lead to poor system performance, higher monthly utility bills and can negatively impact the environment.
Commercial refrigeration consumes significant energy in supermarkets, restaurants and convenience stores. Taking advantage of energy-efficient upgrades can reduce costs, keep food fresher, save on manpower and maintenance, and present your products in a more flattering light.

Demand response programs for healthcare customers
Healthcare facilities have unique needs and challenges when it comes to reducing energy usage. As a result, the healthcare industry prefers low-risk, low-commitment programs. Learn more about demand response programs.
Here are some examples of programs that have worked for customers in the healthcare industry:
Distributed generation and customer resilience
On-site customer generation can help to reduce energy usage and cost while providing resiliency during utility outages. Learn about PG&E’s Self-Generation Incentive Program, which provides incentives for battery storage and qualifying self-generation.
Community Microgrid Enablement Program (CMEP)
Community microgrids can help to provide resiliency during utility outages by pairing on-site generation with storage systems, for both single customers and communities. The CMEP can help applicants create and operate a Community Microgrid.
To be eligible for the CMEP:
- The project must meet the needs of one critical facility (see FAQs), plus at least one additional customer within the microgrid boundary
- The project must be located in a high fire threat district (Tier 2 or 3), an area that has been impacted by prior Public Safety Power Shutoff Events or an area “prone to outages”
- The project must have demonstrated support with a letter of interest from the local government, Tribe or Community Choice Aggregator (CCA) having jurisdiction over the area
- The project must include interconnected exporting energy-producing resources (Project Resources) that do not exceed 20MW in aggregate
- The project must also meet the requirements of the Community Microgrid Enablement Tariff (PDF), which governs the eligibility, development, and operation of Community Microgrids.

Frequently asked questions
Rebates offer cash back for completing a qualified energy efficiency project. They are payments you receive after you’ve upgraded to new, energy-saving equipment. Qualifying products can be found in the Business Rebate Catalog.
The program runs from January 1, 2016 till further notice. Funding is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are used or the program ends, whichever comes first. The program may be modified or terminated without prior notice, and additional terms and conditions apply.
To be eligible, the installation address must have a commercial gas or electric account with PG&E. If the rebate is for an electric product, you must have an electric account and gas product rebates require a gas account.
Before you begin your project, check if the product you’re planning to purchase and install qualifies for a rebate. Find qualifying products. Each product has a unique potential energy saving value and the catalogs outline the type of savings you could expect and estimated payback timing.
It’s easy to apply for your rebate and get cash back for your business. Visit the online PG&E Business Rebate Application.
Rebate checks are mailed within six to eight weeks after we receive your paper application or eRebates Confirmation Page and proofs of purchase. If your application is incomplete or selected for verification, processing time could take longer. Rebate applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis or until funds are depleted.
To check the status of your rebate application online, sign in or register for an online account. Your status is located on the eRebates page. Select Check Rebate Application Status.
If your rebate application is denied, you’ll receive a letter explaining what you must do to resubmit it.
