Home electrification

Key resources for moving toward an all-electric home

Complete your project quickly and efficiently.

Why choose electric?

Building Electrification

More Californians are swapping out their gas appliances for electric. Making the switch has many benefits.

Improve efficiency

Electric appliances are 3-5 times more energy-efficient than gas counterparts.

Lower your enery bill

Energy-efficient technology can help lower your energy usage, which can translate into savings on your energy bill.

Use appliances during power outages

With solar and battery storage, you can keep important appliances or devices running during an outage.

Reduce your carbon footprint

Electrification helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and supports the transition to clean energy.

A peak inside an all-electric home

Did you know?

Heat pump technology is the most efficient way to heat water and heat and cool your home. Instead of generating heat, heat pumps transfer heat from one place to another.
It’s also essential to moving toward an energy-efficient, electric home.

Electric appliances

Transitioning to an electric home can start with replacing an old, inefficient appliance or one that needs major repairs.

Induction stoves. Induction stoves are up to 90% energy-efficient, while electric resistance stoves are 75% and gas stoves are 40% efficient. Interested in trying induction cooking? Borrow a countertop plug-in induction cooktop and a pan for two weeks—at no cost. Visit the Induction Cooktop Loaner Program.

Heat-pump water heater. Heat pump water heaters use about 70% less energy to heat water than standard water heaters.

Space heating and cooling. A heat pump can reduce your heating electricity use by 50% compared to electric resistance heating such as furnaces. It also dehumidifies better than central AC, so it will use less energy when cooling your home.

Electric heat-pump clothes dryer. Electric heat pump dryers can reduce energy usage by an extra 28% compared to standard electric resistance dryers.

Solar, battery storage and EV chargers

Solar panels. Lower your carbon footprint even more, support grid reliability, and reduce energy bills by generating your own power with solar. Get started with solar.

Battery storage. When combined with a renewable energy source, battery storage can power your home when needed. You can also save money by using stored energy when rates are higher during peak hours of the day. Find out if battery storage is right for you.

EV charger. Find the EV charging station that is right for your home and electric vehicle needs:

  • Level 1: Plug your EV into a standard 110-volt wall outlet.
  • Level 2: Charge your EV 4 times faster than a Level 1. Requires 240-volt wall outlet professionally installed on a dedicated circuit.
  • Direct Current Fast Charging: Quickly replenish your electric battery during long trips or when needing a quick recharge at participating sites.

Rate plans

Choose the rate plan that best fits your household

Transitioning from gas to electric appliances will increase overall electricity usage. However, the increased efficiency of new electric appliances and EVs may decrease overall energy and fossil fuel costs.

PG&E offers a variety of rate plans to maximize the benefits of an all-electric home. For all tiered rates, energy used within your baseline allowance is billed at a lower price. The price increases as you use more energy and move beyond the allowance amount during your billing cycle.

Electric Home Rate Plan (E-ELEC)

Your best option if you have one or more of these technologies:

  • Electric vehicle charger
  • Battery storage
  • Electric heat pump for water heating or climate control

Time-of-Use rate plans

Time-of-Use plans offer lower prices when demand is low and renewable energy is plentiful.  Reduce costs by shifting energy use to hours when rates are lower.

Electric Vehicle (EV) rate plans

If you charge an EV at home, you’re eligible for the EV2-A plan. It combines your vehicle’s electricity usage with your home’s usage.

Your best rate

We offer a variety of rate plans based on how and when you use energy. Compare rate plans based on your usage.

Consider all-electric baseline savings

If you install electric space heating as your primary source of heating, you may be eligible for additional baseline allowance.

For all tiered rate plans and some time-of-use (E-1 and E-TOU-C) rate plans, the all-electric baseline for space heating offers a higher baseline for customers that install permanent space heating systems (e.g., heat pump space heating). An increase in your baseline quantity will increase the amount of energy that is billed at the lowest rate. To request an all-electric baseline for space heating allowance, call 1-800-743-5000.

Contractors

Licensed contractors can provide expert guidance and know-how that may lead to potential savings. In addition, your contractor can:

  • Identify the project scope
  • Assess if an electrical panel upgrade is required
  • Submit project plans to PG&E on your behalf
  • Obtain necessary permits
  • Complete your installation according to professional standards
