Our state has a long history of leading the nation in protecting the environment, creating cleaner air and water, and protecting wilderness.

Examples include:

  • requiring all new passenger cars, trucks and SUVs sold in the state to be zero-emission by 2035;

  • the state’s Cap-and-Trade Program, which creates an economic incentive for businesses to reduce emissions;

  • and a ban on natural gas-powered furnace and water heater sales starting in 2030.

That legacy continues with home electrification, as California works towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2045.

It’s ambitious. And like previous movements, switching homes from fossil fuel-burning equipment to efficient electric alternatives is critical in fighting the climate crisis.

That’s where PG&E comes in – raising awareness about the benefits of electrification and helping customers adopt clean appliances.

Benefits

Energy-efficient technology helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, supports the transition to clean energy, and lowers your energy consumption, which saves you money on your energy bill.

Electric heat pumps can save PG&E customers up to $78 a month in energy costs. Induction stoves and other electric appliances are up to five times more energy-efficient than gas counterparts.

Battery storage can save money by using stored energy when rates are higher during peak hours of the day. Solar panels can reduce your energy bills and lower your carbon footprint even more, while supporting grid reliability.

How to Get Started

Electrifying your home doesn’t need to happen overnight. You can start with just one or two appliances. One option is to start with an appliance that needs major repairs or replacing. Another is to look at the appliances that consume the most energy.

A great place to start is pge.com/electrification where you can learn more about appliances, rebates, how to find a licensed contractor, electric rate plan options, and other online tools.

While costs associated with electrification projects can delay some homeowners from swapping out their gas-powered appliances with electric options, there are many ways to make the conversion on a budget. This detailed breakdown of equipment prices, programs, rebates and incentives, and other resources can help guide your electrification journey.

Designing an all-electric home may require an electrical panel upgrade. This guide explains how to estimate the available capacity of your current electrical panel and breaks down the steps to take if you need an upgrade.

Don’t know what to ask a contractor? PG&E has a list of questions to help jump start the conversation and make the transition smooth and easy.
