Urgent Alert

Completing cleanups at former power plant sites

Environmental remediation

PG&E's environmental commitment includes carefully evaluating, addressing and overseeing the cleanup of legacy contamination resulting from our historic operations. Performed with oversight from federal, state and local agencies, PG&E is addressing impacts by remediating soil and groundwater at power plants the company formerly owned and operated, substations and natural gas gathering stations.

Our Environmental Remediation department has made significant progress over the last three decades. Remediation at all ten power plants has been completed:

  • Contra Costa Power Plant
  • Geysers Power Plant
  • Humboldt Bay Power Plant
  • Hunters Point Power Plant
  • Kern Power Plant
  • Morro Bay Power Plant
  • Moss Landing Power Plant
  • Oakland Power Plant
  • Pittsburg Power Plant
  • Potrero Power Plant

This work included remediation of the Hunters Point Power Plant and Potrero Power Plant in San Francisco. In 2006, PG&E closed the Hunters Point power plant. Remediation began with addressing impacts from multiple area cleanups and development efforts. Remediation is now complete. The onsite substation is in the decommissioning process.

In 2003, PG&E officially completed the Potrero Power Plant multi-year upland and in-water remediation cleanup. The 34-acre site was a former manufactured gas plant and power plant property. The power station site is currently entitled for:

  • A total of 2,601 homes
  • 1.6 million square feet of commercial space
  • A 250-room waterfront hotel
  • Close to 100,000 square feet of retail uses

Future development will be approved by the City and County of San Francisco.
