IMPORTANT
Plan ahead to stay safe
In an emergency, it’s important to have enough supplies. Here’s what you’ll need:
Food and water
- 1 gallon of water per person per day
- Nonperishable food items that are easy to prepare without power
- Tools and utensils like a non-electric can opener, forks, spoons and knives
- Baby and pet food
Equipment
- Flashlights (do not use candles)
- Two sets of extra batteries
- A battery-powered or hand-crank radio
- Mobile phone and portable charger
Health & personal supplies
- Basic first-aid kit
- Medication (prescription and non-prescription)
- Eyeglasses
- Blankets and extra clothing
- Toiletries
- Cash and credit cards
- Important documents (copies of IDs, medical records, pet vaccinations and family photos)
- Activities for children
Put supplies in waterproof containers and store them in a place that’s easy to reach. Whether you are sheltering at home or evacuating, you may need to get your supplies quickly.
Create a plan with all members of your household:
- Prepare two ways to escape your home.
- Confirm your emergency exit locations.
- Determine a place where your family can reunite after evacuating.
- Keep your pets in mind.
- Practice your emergency plan.
- Review your plan with everyone in your household every three to six months.
- Share your plan with any guests or visitors.
Evaluate your home ahead of time, using the following guidelines:
- Know when and how to turn off your electricity and gas.
- Locate fire extinguishers and learn how to use them.
- Learn how to open your garage door manually.
- Install smoke alarms throughout your home.
- Make sure your standby generator is working properly.
- Get your installer's emergency phone number if you use rooftop solar panels.
